Final Reflection

My greatest moment was the "what's next article"
My most formative experience is when I interviewed potential customers about the preferences of my venture. It was very helpful in addition to the elevator pitches we conducted in order to sell our product to potential investors.
I think that I have moved closer to an entrepreneurial mindset. It puts you in the position of creating a successful business venture
For the students that are taking this class in the future I would advise to prioritize time management and complete all assignments well before the due date as soon as they come about. In order to obtain the entrepreneurial mindset I work really hard to obtain the desired venture.

Week 15 Reading Reflection

This final reading was on Business Basics at the base of the business pyramid.
I have never heard of Microfinance until reading this review. Vikram is also a very inspirational individual, someone I never heard of before but should be recognized more for rewriting the future of microfinance ventures.
It was frustrating to hear about the little capital these companies had to support the poorer (or base of the business pyramid) men and women.
I would ask one question actually and thats why is this not a more well-known concept so businesses around the world can implement this?
Vikram had very solid ideas and a great storyline behind. I never felt he wrong in what he was writing and thoroughly enjoyed reading this review.

Venture Concept No. 2

Opportunity
The opportunity that I utilized is primarily directed toward college students. In recent years, there has been a health kick in our country to encourage everyone to make better, smarter decisions regarding our health. That being said, even though it includes everyone, I am directly targeting students or young adults ranging from years 17 to around 24. Around this period in our lives, there is a lot of transitioning. A large majority of students go to college after high school and during this time it becomes very difficult to keep up a healthy lifestyle. Many customers, or students in my case, need a quick fix when it comes to eating meals or snacks. They end up resorting to convenient fatty foods that lack nutrition. Although they are aware that it might not be the best for them, they resort to it anyways because a lot of students are under the idea that healthy alternatives are quite difficult to incorporate in their diet due to preparation and they think it lacks taste. They choose to eat unhealthy food because its easy and simple, however I believe their loyalty to those products aren’t strong. They can be easily swayed or replaced once a better, and just as convenient product is produced. This opportunity can be very beneficial because it’s still pretty new. Not many people or organizations have targeted college students in particular. This opportunity is a growing industry and a rising lifestyle that can be implemented in campuses around the country.

Innovation/Venture Concept
My product consists of a delivery box system, with options of choosing a continuous delivery system consisting of various boxes delivered every 2 to 4 weeks based on the customer’s discretion. The other option is for the customer to purchase a single box, a part of our signature collection so they can opt out of subscribing to the service. These boxes that will be conveniently delivered to the customers’ doorstep will model an ideal healthy life style for a college student. Inside these delivered boxes, I plan to include “Health Help!” newsletters that would include fast tricks and convenient tips making the transition to a healthier lifestyle easy and enjoyable. In addition to the newsletters, I intend on including various snacks or other products that college students can afford. All of my boxes will include a little “sneak peek” into all the health world has to offer. Each box or delivery, for that matter, will have snacks that can range from granola bars to samples of different butters like almond butter or cashew butter. Customers can subscribe to the delivery system, and based on whether they choose the 2-week delivery or 4-week, the price will be adjusted accordingly. Around $11.50 for 2-week delivery and 12.00 for 4-week interval delivery. If they choose to buy boxes separately that may incur an additional price. My mission is to currently appeal to UF students and my vision is to hopefully end up implementing this business to state schools and universities on a national scale. That being said, I would like to incorporate the opportunity for local delivery systems. It may cut costs on product transportation in the beginning which would be very helpful as we start out. We can utilize students as bikers, who would deliver the pre-made box to their location on campus and those who are farther away can hire drivers for those runs instead. In the beginning works of this business, I would most likely be delivering products myself locally in order to keep costs minimal.
In order for customers to switch to this product there has to be a good amount of exposure. The largest obstacle we will have in getting customers to switch is the cost difference in their substitutes. Easy and fast meals that are commonly used amongst college students are products like Easy Mac or Lean Pockets. It will be hard to get them to switch if they haven’t heard about it before or are unfamiliar with delivery box systems. Competitors will consist of places around Gainesville that are offering healthier alternatives like 3 Natives or Tropical Smoothie. We can be potentially vulnerable since we wouldn’t have a designated store location for customers to see the product on hand or try it in person first. Packaging is vital. It’s the only physical element the customers will see of our company so it must be of well quality and very professional-looking. The capital to my company wont be too large employee-wise, especially in the beginning. Once the packaging is delivered, it will only need to be filled and delivered. So I will only need 2 to 5 employees at most in beginning. This venture will depend strongly on technology. It is where the majority of orders, subscriptions, interface showcasing products, product details and prices, and customer service will be conducted/shown. At first I would start the ordering by a website-only setup. But once the ball gets rolling, I plan to incorporate this system as a mobile app as well to easily preference or contact the business at hands reach, or thumbs reach to be technical.

My venture's secret sauce happens to do with its convenience. Locally, through UF's campus and the Gainesville area in general, I think that will be it's strongest leg up from other competitors. The convenience in subscribing, the convenience in ordering, the convenience in its delivery, etc. The entire processing, production, and delivery starts right here in the swamp.

What's Next for this venture? I hope for this product and its service to grow and expand throughout it's years, which will lead for it to reach different campuses. Once this business acquires enough capital, there will be enough flexibility to add new products, we can merge with other organizations and have symbiotic relationships with one another. Campus-wise there can be customized boxes per university. UF-themed, FSU-themed(not to psyched about this one, but very willing), and other universities can customize a signature box that their students can purchase.

And finally, What's Next for me? This course has allowed me to think of my dreams and aspirations that I once thought would only be dreams and aspirations, to go past that. Getting put into an environment out of my comfort zone, and thinking those fun thoughts in my head without the intention of ever telling anyone or making these ideas happen are now a thing of the past. This initial idea for me, I never thought it would be attainable but after research and exposing so many different elements of this concept, I can now see that this could actually work one day. I currently am not ready to make these foundations concrete, however I think this could be a great concept to incorporate amongst all the college start-ups that have taken off.

Elevator Pitch No.4

A reflection on the feedback you received from your last pitch.
The comments I received based on my last pitch were very positive. I was commended on dressing presentably and on my delivery. My feedback didn't include any issues or ways that I should be improving my pitch.

What did you change, based on the feedback?

There were no changes made based on my previous feedback.

Week 14 Reading Reflection

The most surprising thing I read about in these two chapters happened to be a very interesting story in how the 3M was founded. In Chapter 3, Francis G. Oakie had the idea that he can replace men's razors with sandpaper that would take off facial hair. That was mind baffling and considered a failure at first until he found success with his invention as waterproof sandpaper in the auto industry, how crazy! I didn't have many questions in this passage in particular. They were two fun interesting chapters that were in this passage! One confusing area in this passage that I thought was the different forms of innovations. If there's been so many things developed throughout history, how much more radical innovation can there be in the creating ideas? And at what point do innovations get categorized from radical to incremental? I guess I did have some questions that I didn't realize at first. There wasn't any point in these readings where I thought or felt the author made incorrect statements in any way.

Very Short Interview Part 2

After reviewing my initial interview with the entrepreneur who is also a good family friend, I can have more understanding in his responses. At first, those responses to me were very abstract since I really didn't have much to compare it to, but I can now see and compare his responses specifically.

I couldn't record this interview, since it wasn't given in person but here are the questions and responses:

  • Was there ever a time when creating a venture, you started realizing that this might not a be profitable and successful idea?
    • "This is more common than you think, and it's okay! It's important to be able to grow from these experiences, and be able to accept to move on from the business idea despite how much work ethic and time you put into it trying to make it work."
  • Is there ever time you stopped trying to create new venture ideas because of a failure?
    • "I once tried to start a physical therapy center in South Florida due to the high demand. After reviewing the higher age demographics, it seemed it would be a very smart venture. However, living in New York it deemed very difficult to launch a business while not being able to be hands on in its creation. I ultimately had to let it go after some time, but I have since continued to launch new ventures and those have been working out very well."
  • What do you think encompasses the criteria of being a "successful entrepreneur"?
    • "Well, as we're on topic with unsuccessful scenarios- I think that having failures of some sort can motivate, thrive, or cause a successful entrepreneur to rise up and prove that they can overcome obstacles. Having the ability to persevere past adversity is a very important quality of a "successful entrepreneur".
From an aspiring entrepreneurs standpoint, I feel that I've grown a lot from taking this courses and being exposed to new experiences. I've certainly been pushed out of my comfort zone on multiple occasion and it has encouraged me to think outside-the-box. I felt much comfortable comfortable asking particular, those of which I would have never asked before.

Week 13 reading reflection

Valuation of entrepreneurial ventures

This reading passage was very interesting. I did have some questions about what the author wrote.
I found most interesting the global perspective excerpt near the end of the chapter. I never knew that Dubai starting growing due to their oil going dry. I always assumed it was built based on the fact that they had so much oil and profits from it that they started building because of that!

Celebrating Failure

I feel that I have failed this semester in time management. I personally prefer classes that I am required to attend in order to receive credit for the class, so having the self-discipline has been an adjustment that I'm still trying to get used to.
I learned that its important that I write everything down that I need to do for the week, but also to keep up with it section out free tim during my days with stuff to do. Like instead of saying get some Entrepreneurship done today, I would set a specific time to go to the library to go get the class work done.

My Exit Strategy

My exit strategy would consist of running the business while I'm here in Gainesville, and continuing to manage once I've started in my career. I hope for my venture to grow in the appropriate amount of time so that it will be a profitable sale. I would like to sell someday, because it would be a good gateway and learning experience when I get the chance again to run a business. When creating my product, I envision it to be very transparent and I hope to develop a strong software system thats so that it would be an easy transition for whoever buys the business.

Whats Next?

Existing Market: In my existing market, I decided to target undergrad students at UF. My additional product of subscription boxes would sustain its loyalty from their customers with a blog connected to my product and its services. There they can subscribe and keep up to date with all they have to offer.

New Market: In the New Market I wanted to target students but at a different stage in their college career. Grad students also have busy schedules but a lot of these students also have to keep up with full-time jobs or families in some cases. The following are interviews of their outlook on my product.

Reflection: The difference in opinion between the 2 target markets was small. I assume it was because we are both still in the learning atmosphere. Especially because we are all still crunched for time, it would be helpful to utilize convenient services like I have with my product.
