World's Biggest Problems (and Solutions!)

There are so many problems around the world today that have been frequently come up in the news. It's important to keep from just observing and ignoring these issues that come about. I have compiled some of the problems that are most important and relevant in recent times.

1. Climate change. This past year in 2015, was the earth's warmest year yet. The average temperature was 1.6 degrees above what it should normally, and that was the largest margin recorded in history according to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). This was due to a regular rotation of the el Nino and an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to gas emissions. One potential solution is to reduce the amount of gas emissions in order to prevent it form getting any worse. Investing in newer technology that is environmentally smart like solar panels or hybrid cars can reduce emissions.

2. Acid attacks. There has recently been a law set in Colombia for all the horrific acid attacks against women where the attacker now has a minimum of 12 years in prison. So it's good that there is progress, but there are many of the same issues around the Middle East in relation to women's rights. The solution is to provide enough influence and exposure in order to get new regulations like Colombia's to make it a safer environment for women who are fighting to have a voice.

3. Killing of civilians. It was reported that 19,000 civilians were this past year in Iraq. Also, more than 3 million were displaced. This is has been since the takeover of Islamic Terrorists in 2014. It's hard to tell the death toll in the country because there is not that much access to it. We need to find a solution to help these civilians. It's hard to fin common ground but the key is each side of the government needs to work together to save this country and other parts of the world from getting affected like this.

4. Chemical weapons. There were reports of nerve gas found in Syrian victims. This is a very scary discovery, it reveals that members of ISIS can be utilizing these weapons to take over places. If this is found in Syrian victims, it can potentially lead to future uses in different areas in order to gain control and can even reach our homeland if we are not careful. It's extremely important we find the source to this nerve gas and squash the production of chemical weapons.

5. Obesity.

This is a huge epidemic that is often overlooked by the world. The prevalence of obesity has more than doubled since the 1980's. It often leads to high blood pressure, diabetes, and life threatening issues like heart disease. Without proper care, obesity can most certainly lead to death. However, we can prevent the widespread plague of obesity around the world. We can cut the production of unhealthy foods that lack nutrition and are sold very cheap to compensate for it's fatty content. We can input taxes on things like sodas and candies that lack any sort of benefit to our wellbeing.

6. Starvation. On the other hand there are many places around the world where people are dying of malnutrition and starvation. Currently in Syria, there are refugee camps that are housing citizens who fleed from the country. However, some of these camps have now ran out of food, and water. The people are slowly wasting away and they can't leave the camps to find food or they risk desertion. We need to help Syria in supplying them with food. We can send in care packages full of nonperishables that can last for weeks even months, as long as its enough for the amount of people that are in the camps.

7. Threat claims. Russia has just claimed the North Atlantic Military Alliance a national threat to their country along with United States. The US claimed Russia to be a national threat as well. There is tension between countries and alliances. With elections rolling around and administrations changing we need to find a common ground to salvage any amicable terms with our alliances and predicted enemies.

8. Ebola. Yes, this is quite a distance from the United States but this prevalent in Africa. Sierra-Leone has reported to have a case of Ebola in their country and this virus is ruthless. It's extremely difficult to keep it from spreading and there is word that they are expecting an increase in flare-ups. The solution is to keep the flare ups to a minimum and not to let anyone travel. Once it leaves its outbreak there is no telling where it can spread.

9. Sex trafficking. Sex trafficking occurs around the world and even in our own backyard. Statistics show that 4.5 million individuals are trapped globally. It's imperative to find the people in charge of their rings and shut down their business.

10. Terrorism. Between all the different names, organizations or movements, they are all the same. ISIS. Jihadists. Islamic terrorists. These people are killing innocent people like civilians and people that fight for our country. We need to send in troops and push them back from infiltrating any more countries and defeat them.

  1. Gabrielle,
Your post is very informative. I myself did not realize how much acid attacks on women had increased and after reading your post and researching it myself, I now know about this horrific problem. I agree that more exposure and awareness about the way women are treated in countries like Columbia needs to happen to stop these tragedies from happening. The problems that you listed such as the killing of civilians and chemical weapons are a result of terrorist organizations. Great post heres a link to mine: http://rtcgator.blogspot.com/2016/01/worlds-biggest-problems.html

  2. I have to echo Riley in saying your post was very informative and I did not know how severe of a problem acid attacks are in the world. Thank you for opening my eyes to this issue. I also liked that you chose to include Ebola on your list. The problem of infectious diseases was one that I nearly put on my list and I am glad you included it. Take a look at my list at http://mrufent.blogspot.com/2016/01/worlds-biggest-problems.html
