Identifying Local Opportunities

"Apartment demand proves costly"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15A9366D47EFAD60?p=AWNB

This article describes the issue of the fast-increasing demand in renting apartments, which makes the rent go higher while incomes have barely changed. The problem that arises is that renters are considered 'cost burdened'. Renters will be coined as burdened if at least 30% of their income goes to their rent. Both the renters and the realtors have the problem because renters wont be able to afford more expensive costs of housing, and the realtors won't be able to fill the space if they cant afford it.

"Homeless count in doubt - Errors cause underreporting, advocates say"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15A9366CCBE570D0?p=AWNB

This article described the miscalculations of homeless residents, and the reasoning behind such calculation. They also explain what they are changing in order to have a more accurate representation in the future. There seems to have been a large underestimation in the count for people that were considered homeless or unsheltered. The problem is in the judgement by the volunteers who could have easily miscommunicated the estimate being that they started the survey at 5 o'clock in the morning.

"County out of money to complete levee upgrade"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15A24A4E157B0218?p=AWNB

Described in this article is a motion to reach out to the Legislature of the state of Florida in order for aid in continuing the funding to fix the levee. This levee is at risk of erosion and breaching if another storm comes about without proper repair and improvement, but the county ran out of the funds to do so. The county is the one encountering the problem because public safety is of the utmost importance for them, so they must reach out to the Legislature in order to continue improvements of the levee.

"Judge faults school"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/159FA8A259D35FB8?p=AWNB

There was an incident at North Andrews Gardens Elementary where one of their third grade students left school without permission to go home during lunch hour. His third grade teacher was suspended for 10 days but now the Judge on the case says that it was the school's fault not hers. They have no way to keep track of the students, which they need to get in order. It is the schools problem since they wrongly accused the teacher for being at fault.

"No-fault insurance at issue"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/159FA8A2A2323620?p=AWNB

Allstate insurance is going to the Florida Supreme Court to look at cases that have become confusing in the lower courts due to Florida being a no-fault state. The state of Florida requires any motorists to have a minimal level of PIP protection. The problem lies within Allstate's policy and who they reimburse and when.

  1. Hey Gabby! Interesting stories you have on your list. All of these stories took place in Florida which is not surprising to me at all. The one story that stood out the most to me was the Homeless count in doubt. It is interesting to see all the crazy stories and events that happen constantly in the state of Florida.

  2. Hi Gabby!

I like the stories on your list. Kind of different from what I was shooting for on mine. I can really feel for the apartment demand. Year after year I continually see apartment complexes becoming fuller and fuller and yet the price always seems to go up. Demand is going up while supply is dropping at a rapid rate, so it won't be a while until we see a decrease in rent pricing.

If you get the opportunity, check out my list:
